Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Palisade is powered by a 3.8-liter V-6 and comes standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission. For a car like this, the engine’s 291 horsepower is sufficient for acceleration. Paddles mounted on the steering wheel are used to manually shift the Palisade’s transmission. Although the gearbox automatically shifts smoothly, going up hills causes the ratios to shift around quite a bit. The base SE, SEL, and Limited trim levels come standard with front-wheel drive, while the top-of-the-line Calligraphy comes standard with all-wheel drive. A transmission cooler, trailer pre-wiring, and sway control are included as standard equipment with every Palisade model. When fitted with the trailer hitch installed by the dealer, it is capable of towing up to 5000 pounds. Our test drive of a loaded Calligraphy model around The Palisade’s smooth ride and quiet interior were highlighted by Asheville, North Carolina; we even tried a little light off-roading and were confident that the large SUV can handle terrain other than what you’ll find in the urban jungle. An all-wheel-drive SEL that we tested performed averagely in terms of acceleration on our test track. In our testing, our all-wheel-drive XRT test car stopped from 70 mph in 161 feet and traveled from zero to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The front-wheel-drive Palisade gets 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. When equipped with all-wheel drive, the Palisade is rated at 19 city and 24 mpg highway. Our all-wheel-drive SEL model only achieved 23 mpg on our 200-mile highway test route, which is lower than its 24-mpg rating. For more information about the Palisade fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Eight people can fit in the SE and SEL trims, but only seven can fit in the Limited and Calligraphy due to the second-row captain’s chairs. In either case, there is plenty of room for passengers in each of the three rows. For simple access to the third row, the second row has a button that moves the seat forward. The doors are effectively soundproofed against traffic noise but very noisy from the wind. Power-folding second- and third-row seats are optional on the SEL and standard on the Limited and Calligraphy. The Palisade can fit 33 carry-on suitcases and has a cargo volume of 86 cubic feet when all the seats are folded. Stowage measures a total of 46 cubic feet with the third row folded and the second row in its upright position. When the third row is used, the volume is only 18 cubes. To store muddy or wet items, use the space under the load floor. However, there is adequate storage inside and beneath the center console. The cubbies in the doors are small.

Infotainment and Connectivity

A 12.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, in-dash navigation, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Bluetooth connectivity is standard on all trims. You can connect two Bluetooth devices at once, and there are up to seven USB ports available. The Palisade can be remotely locked, unlocked, and started with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant when it has Hyundai’s Blue Link app service.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

On top of the standard safety equipment, nearly every advanced safety system can be added to higher trim levels. For more information about the Palisade’s crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
  • Standard adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving mode

How Does the 2023 Palisade Drive?

The fact that the redesigned Palisade drives a lot like the 2020–2022-generation model won’t likely come as a surprise. The suspension allows the car to make finer adjustments to changing road surfaces, but the difference it makes is practically indiscernible. The Palisade’s continued ease of use and comfort are what matter most. Even more impressive, if you decide to drive along with the radio off, it’s so quiet you’ll only have your tinnitus for aural company.

Pulling away from a stop is simple with a relaxed throttle, but the 291 horsepower 3.8-liter V6 doesn’t feel that strong until it’s well into its top rev range. You’ll need to keep your foot firmly planted on the ground if you want to pass cars on the highway. It’s much simpler to stop, thankfully. Coming to a careful stop is simple with an easy-to-modulate brake pedal, and the head spin that more sensitive brake pedals can cause is diminished.

The shifts themselves are sharper than before thanks to revised transmission tuning, but the paddle shifters mounted on the wheel react slowly. Really, the only effective remedy is to never use the paddles. The Palisade discovers the appropriate equipment when left to its own devices. Although we didn’t have a chance to test the Palisade’s handling during our drive, we don’t think that it will matter much to prospective buyers.

After all, these vehicles spend the majority of their lives hauling passengers and their assorted addenda from school to soccer games and back home again. A Palisade-class SUV won’t frequently—if ever—be asked to perform additional tasks. The XRT trim, on the other hand, might be of a little more interest to you if you enjoy a little adventure (as so many Americans have in the post-COVID era).

Although the muddy, rutted trails we were given the opportunity to drive on off-road were hardly difficult, they were representative of the kind of conditions this car might encounter. When equipped with the XRT package, the Palisade handled these trails with ease. In the trickier sections, the locking center differential of the all-wheel-drive system helped the SUV climb slick inclines and scramble out of muddy ruts. It won’t attempt Moab, but it will carry you to your campsite with ease.

Buying Hyundai Palisade: Expert Advice

Steady Sales: The Hyundai Palisade placed in the middle of the fiercely competitive Midsize SUV segment in 2022 after selling almost as many units as the year before. However, it still has a long way to go before it reaches the top, as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which leads its class, and the Toyota Highlander each outsold the Palisade by a ratio of more than two to one in 2017.

Competitive Prices: A base trim Palisade starts at $35,250, which is about $1,800 less than the segment’s average MSRP for entry-level models. Taking a few pricey outliers like the Grand Cherokee into account, the starting price of an all-wheel-drive, top-trim Palisade Calligraphy is roughly $51,100, which is the class average starting price for models in that trim level.
