Jeep Wrangler 4xe Review – A full battery allows you to travel about 22 miles on all-electric power in the Wrangler Unlimited with the 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain. Additionally, all of the trademark Wrangler characteristics remain. The 4xe is expensive, though, and unless you can recharge frequently, its green credentials are in doubt.

Specs About Jeep Wrangler 4xe Review

Pros

  • Plug-in hybrid powertrain with about 22 miles of electric range
  • Exceptional off-roading capability
  • Removable doors and top
  • Lots of ways to customize to personal preferences

Cons

  • More expensive than a regular Wrangler
  • Driven as a hybrid, it’s less fuel-efficient than most regular Wranglers
  • Lots of wind and road noise at highway speeds
  • Slow, loose feel to the steering when driving on pavement

Comfort

The Wrangler 4xe is remarkably cozy. The robust construction that gives the Wrangler its ready-for-anything personality also contributes to a bumpy ride, especially in the off-road-capable Rubicon trim. With the optional power-retractable soft top, the boxy design and large tires generate a lot of wind and road noise. On the highway, the Wrangler’s ride did seem to be a little bit smoother due to the 4xe powertrain’s additional weight.

The front seats are one of the highlights of the Wrangler, despite the fact that it doesn’t give much consideration to passenger comfort. They are well-shaped and remain comfortable even during lengthy trips. The rear bench is flatter and firmer, but it reclines a bit. We appreciate the efficient climate control system, which includes rear air vents.

Interior

The biggest change, aside from those drive mode buttons, is hidden most of the time unless you specifically look for it: the lithium-ion battery pack stowed beneath the back seat. (A two-door Wrangler 4xe is unlikely to be released any time soon, based on that placement.)

The only space lost to accommodate the battery is a small amount in the cargo compartment because the power pack’s lip spills into it by a few inches, aside from the relatively unnoticeable increase in mass. There wouldn’t even be a trace of it…except for the fact that the space is now juuust small enough to make stowing the two front panels of the If you want them to lay flat, it can be challenging to use a Freedom Top.

Technology

Regardless of trim, the 4xe has an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Alpine premium audio is included with all models. If you go for the Rubicon or High Altitude, you can add a forward-facing trail camera.

Storage

How’s the storage? The Jeep’s narrow body is a strength off-road, but it reduces cargo capacity in comparison to rivals like the Toyota 4Runner. Even so, if you need to transport more cargo, the rear seats fold neatly into the floor. Also included are a floor compartment and six strong tie-down points. Up front, there aren’t many places to store small items, and the door pockets are nothing more than shallow nets.

As long as they’re not too bulky, car seats can be easily installed in the Unlimited; however, you may need to slide the front seat forward to make room for a rear-facing seat. The Wrangler can tow up to 3,500 pounds, which is decent for the class, and can be flat-towed behind a motorhome.

Fuel Economy

How is the fuel economy? It can be a smart choice if you can regularly plug the 4xe in and have a brief commute. 22 miles are the EPA’s estimates for the 4xe’s electric range before the engine kicks in. Our best effort only allowed us to fit 18.7 miles.

The Wrangler 4xe has a fairly low electrical efficiency, or at least when compared to other plug-in hybrids, in terms of how far it can go on one kWh of electricity. The Wrangler Rubicon, however, has a brick-like shape and large knobby tires, so you should temper your expectations accordingly.

The 4xe’s combined fuel economy rating is only 20 mpg after the electric power runs out. Ironically, all Wrangler engines except for the V6 with manual transmission and the V8 are worse than that, with the exception of a few. After running out of electricity on our mixed-driving evaluation route, we still managed to get 20.2 mpg.

Wildcard

The Jeep Wrangler stands out from the crowd like few other cars. This is one of the few no-compromise off-road vehicles left. This results in a vehicle that stands out by nearly all standards when combined with a potent plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Safety Ratings and Features

The Jeep Wrangler wears a three-star rollover rating from the NHTSA and in IIHS testing, it earns some Along with some Marginal and Poor headlight ratings, Good crashworthiness ratings are also given. In one IIHS crash test, a non-plug-in Wrangler flipped over. You will need to make a financial commitment for active safety features. Another package includes adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking, while a third includes blind-spot monitoring along with front and rear parking sensors. The first package is included in the highest-range High Altitude models, but the second is not.

Performance, Efficiency, Battery, and Range

With two electric motors and a 17-kWh battery, the 4xe upgrades the standard Wrangler’s 2.0-liter turbo I-4 and eight-speed automatic transmissions. This is the most potent Wrangler available, barring the expensive Rubicon 392, with a total system output of 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. In our testing, the plug-in reached 60 mph in 6.8 seconds.

The Wrangler 4xe is rated for 49 mpg-e combined on gas and electricity, and it has a range of up to 22 miles when using only electricity. But once those electrons are used up, efficiency falls to just 20 mpg combined. Since the standard four-cylinder Wrangler only gets 22–23 mpg combined, the 4xe is only practical if you have access to a charging station.

How Many Miles Can the Jeep 4xe Go on Electric?

With the 17-kWh battery fully charged up, the EPA claims the Wrangler 4xe can travel 21 miles on electricity alone before the gas engine needs to rear its head. But you can anticipate doing better with practice. On battery power alone, I was able to travel nearly 25 miles.

How Far Can Jeep 4xe Drive in Hybrid Mode?

A plug-in hybrid with an electric range of 49 miles is good. That means a Wrangler 4xe driver is capable of traveling 49 miles on a single tank of gas. As a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), the Wrangler 4xe can also do well off-road. Up to 370 miles can be traveled on a single tank of gas.

Jeep Wrangler 4xe: is the Wrangler 4xe a Good Value?

You’ll need to be a very specific buyer for the 4xe to be a good value. The 4xe powertrain can raise the cost of a Wrangler by more than $10,000, depending on the trim level you choose. Thankfully, the 4xe Wrangler qualifies for the $7,500 federal tax credit (as well as a number of state and local incentives), though those incentives won’t be available to all buyers. The EPA-estimated 22 miles of all-electric range should be enough for most short commutes, so that will help with the cost of gas.

The build quality is distinctive and satisfying, just like it is on other Wranglers. Although the materials are appealing and feel good to the touch, the interior is identical to that of much less expensive Wranglers. The roadside assistance and warranty protection offered by Jeep are standard.
